Introduction to Native Plant Papermaking

Saturday February 24 - 1pm to 4pm - Adults and Mature Teens - $100 per session ($95 for members)

Discover the hidden world of native plant fibre and learn how to make your own paper from scratch.

Following an introduction to basic papermaking skills, this workshop will allow you to hone your skills by making several harakeke paper products including sheets of paper in sizes A4 and A5, cards, letter writing stationery and more.

In addition to the practical skills, this workshop covers technical aspects of preparing your own materials using simple appliances and commonly found plants. You’ll also learn about some of the history of papermaking, such as how methods vary with regional traditions between Asia and Europe, and other materials that can be used.

Finished harakeke paper typically has a light straw colour and its own unique texture and feel. The paper is unsized (without chemical additives) and suitable for a wide range of uses.

All paper produced during the workshop will be dried and pressed at the tutor’s workshop and then be available to collect from Feilding Art Centre one week after the workshop.

All materials are provided.
