Newbury School
This year, Newbury School presents the works of 14 student artists. To communicate their ideas about wellbeing, each student chose to take inspiration from an element of Te Whare Tapa Wha.

The focus I worked on was Taha tinana. My muscle man shows fitness and body strength. Taha tinana is all about physical wellbeing and health. We got our inspiration from The Rock and we tried to make it look as life like as we could.

My focus was taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing). This is my kowhaiwhai panel. This actually resembles earth. We live on earth and Newbury school is on earth. I chose this pattern because we are an enviro school. Enviro means looking after our environment and environment means earth. So that’s why I chose this pattern.

The inspiration for my art piece was based of my love of farming and cows. I included all the things I enjoy surfing, running, farming, animals and more. We also included family traditions and our family. I interpreted everything I enjoy and love into this piece of art and tried to be as creative as I could. Each of the 5 cow patches represent the different important things to us and what makes us who we are.

Focus on: Taha Hinengaro, Mental Wellbeing. My piece of art is based off Rarotonga. I chose this because when I went to Rarotonga it made my mental wellbeing good and I wanted to do my art around that. I chose the palm tree because I enjoyed all of the palm trees in Rarotonga and I feel that they are clear memory for me. I really like how my art turned out and I feel as if it shows my mental wellbeing. I am very proud of my art.

Focus on: Taha hinengaro, Mental Wellbeing. My art piece is based on my favourite fruit that I eat all of the time, especially on hot and sunny days. Watermelons are a sweet and refreshing fruit that cools you down in the summer. They make lovely slushies and so much more. With this art I can always remember how much I love my sweet watermelon. My art shows my lovely mental wellbeing.

My Area of focus from Te Whare Tapa Wha was Taha Wairua (Spiritual Wellbeing). For my Kowhaiwhai Panel I used the designs: Korus, Mangopare and Aroha. The Koru is a big value to our Kura as it is all about “creation”. Our Kura has great creation as well as it being one of our Drive Values.

I did my family name, our traditional birthday breakfast, the Palmerston North clock tower, a netball hoop and ball because I love playing it and my pony, Pineto. The Tree in the middle of the page symbolises a new beginning and a new start. The Poppies on each side of the page represent our soldiers that fought during the world war. The market symbolises people having food being mentally and socially well and families having meals.

The koru patterns are whanau or anyone close to you, and colourful bubbles/circles are friends. The blobs are meant to be paint splattered around for art. The musical notes are there because I like singing/music, And with the table and shelf with the books is a classroom for school.

Students at FIS learned about all different ways of expressing toi ora through their art. While some students drew on Te Whare Tapa Wha, others drew on the concept of mindfulness.

We learned about mindfulness and how we can practice being in the present moment to help us let go of negative thoughts. I found the sound of water very calming and relaxing. Starfish have always always fascinated me by the way they look, their colour and the way they feel, like they're from a fantasy world.

My Mask is a representation of who I am, my hauora. The world sees my tinana, my physical self. They see my love of LEGO, superheroes and Scouts. But, underlying that are my fears, my worries, my dark side that is often hidden. They have an impact on my wairua and hingenaro. They are just as important as what I allow the world to see.

Focus on: Use of doodling to help promote wellbeing and develop an understanding that drawings that may seem mindless can improve memory, focus and understanding. After watching the work of Mr Doodle, Summer listened to a story describing a playground and drew her response to it. This shows that playgrounds (and doodling) are important for us to be well.

While I was creating my piece of art, I was trying to show others that looks mean nothing and all that matters is what's on the inside.

Not everyone has to be perfect. Their looks don't show who they are on the inside. It is a person's personality that matters. This mask is a representation of my taha hinengaro and what it means to me. The right side is based on how the world sees me. For some psychologists, people believe the right side of your brain is connected to your creativity and memories, whereas the left side is believed to control abstract thinking and thinking beyond the physical world. The left side is what goes on in my mind, my fears and how I see myself, rather than the outlined, solid and colourful right side that I let the world believe.

Artwork Title: An Unlikely Pair
We learned about mindfulness and how we can practice being in the present moment to help us let go of negative thoughts. We looked at how the repetitive motion of zentangles can be a calming activity. The reason I chose a rabbit as my main feature is because I wanted a sense of wonder in my artwork. I have a rabbit and find they are very curious animals. An Unlikely Pair is this because a rabbit is full of wonder, but a butterfly is calm, delicate and wise.

I love doing art because it relaxes me and calms me when I am feeling stressed. Around the Clocks represents light at the end of the tunnel and that no day is every the same so there is always something to look forward to, which gives us hope.

I find painting calming and when I paint it reminds me of my great grandma who is no longer with us. I have painted a nature scene because it reminds me of spending time with my family and friends in beautiful locations around New Zealand. We love to swim and play games together. Artwork Title: Bubbles the Panda
I love needle felting as it allows you to be creative! It is really therapeutic to stab wool with a needle to create something amazing. Needle felting allows you to get rid of any frustrations you may have. I like how needle felting is sustainable as all you need is wool. It means you can create toys that are 100% biodegradable so no plastic is going into the environment. If anything breaks, it is easy to repair so you don't need to throw it away. Needle felting represents taha hinengaro (mental and emotional) and whenua (land, roots).

My poppa who recently passed away has inspired me to sketch and draw. When I sketch it reminds me of him because we used to draw together. My artwork represents my love of horses. When I draw and paint horses it makes me feel joyful and satisfied. I love using different techniques, combined to create interest in my art. Renee A - Year 7
Artwork Title: Skinflint
My mask and character in the play is Skin Flint, who is a stone age person. She is on a very tight budget and is not afraid to tell others about how poor she is. Some values of te taha hinengaro are represented within this character because she has mentally accepted her lack of money but still gets upset and stressed sometimes because she cannot buy what she wants.

I like being a dinosaur because they are big and strong. I gave mine spikes because I wanted it to look scary. I gave it big teeth so it can eat lots of meat. My mask is based on the character, Old Bones in our school production of Stone Age rage. Te taha whānau is represented because my character is very caring to the younger members of the stone age community. Te taha honengaro is also represented because she is old, sweet, and has lived a very happy life.

We made masks for our school production. Mine is a caveman called Trevor. I made a caveman with big ears so he can hear things from far away and if someone tip-toed into his cave he can hear them even though they are very quiet. He has lots of freckles on his face from lying in the sun. Area of focus from Te Whare Tapa Wha is te taha hinengaro because it refers to the mental and emotional wellbeing of a person.

My mask represents my character in the play, Cre, assistant to Dr. D.Zyne. Te taha hinengaro is represented in my character because I am confident to help Dr. D.Zyne with his inventions and show them to the world.

Katie - Year 7
Artwork Title: Cora Cobblestone
My character and mask are Cora Cobblestone, who is a stone age person stuck in her ways. This corresponds with te taha honengaro because this represents the mental and emotional wellbeing of a person. Cora cannot think creatively which is why she doesn't like change and believes that change will be stressful for her mental health. Te taha wairua is also represented because Cora's ancestors never changed, so that was one of the values that has ben passed down to her.

My mask, Dino, relates to our school's recent production. Dino was a dinosaur and represented the values of te taha whānau. He was a very helpful dinosaur because when stone age people were lost in the wastelands, DIno helped them find their way home, creating a sense of community.

Doctor D-Zyne is based on te taha whānau, meaning acknowledging the importance of whānau in providing sustenance, support and an environment important for good health. My Dr D-Zyne mask is connected to the recent school production, where I played Dr D-Zyne. The character is intelligence and has the ability to create his own inventions! Dr D-Zyne also thinks of others like his friends and family. Friends and the community make our daily lives better.

This work emphasises all four areas of Te Whare Tapa Wha. The Ruahine Ranges are Eve's maunga, and she sees it everyday from her house. The painting encapsulates our whānau visits to our maunga - it is a place where we swim, tramp, cook over a fire, play in the snow, see the glow worms, where dad hunts for venison and where the sun rises every morning.
